welcome!
I founded The Gigis because I was yearning for new learning and social connection, and I figured I couldn’t be the only one.
I realized that I am at my happiest whenever I have a great conversation with someone that leaves my brain buzzing with possibilities or satisfied with new learning. I often found myself Googling “author and speaker events near me,” only to come up with nothing that felt relevant or particularly affordable.
Another thing missing from my life was a sense of community beyond my friend group. When my kids were small, community just fell into my lap. It would take 30 minutes to grab a couple items from the store because I would run into people I knew from soccer, robotics, or dance class. I loved the comfort of knowing and being known back then. But now that the kids are grown, I find I need to be intentional about community or I simply won’t have one.
I also read the same articles you do that opine that one of the reasons we’ve become so divided as a society is because of our isolation. When we don’t have to look one another in the eyes and breathe the same air, it is easy to forget our shared humanity.
This is why I decided to build the thing I want to see in the word: an in-person community of women committed to personal development, new learning, and plenty of fun. If you are in Silicon Valley, I hope you will join us. If you are elsewhere and want to start a chapter where you live, please let me know—we are expanding!
Love,
Shana
